Waldorf Block: G3: Third Grade Housing Block

In Waldorf third grade, the Housing or Shelter block is a significant part of the curriculum. It's a time when students explore how humans have created dwellings throughout history and around the world, adapting to different climates and resources. This block is developmentally important for third graders, as it meets their burgeoning need to understand their place in the world and how humans interact with their environment. It also provides opportunities for creative expression and collaborative work. This block contains the housing block lessons for third grade. You can see more details in the class list below.

This block includes:
  • Exploring various types of shelters: From igloos and tipis to adobe homes and houses on stilts, students learn about different architectural styles and the cultures that developed them.
  • Hands-on building projects: Children often have the opportunity to build their own model shelters, allowing them to engage with practical skills and creatively express their understanding.
  • Connecting with the land: The block emphasizes how people use local materials and consider the environment when building.
  • Understanding the purpose of shelter: Students reflect on the practical reasons for building shelters, such as protection from the elements and creating a comfortable home.
  • Developing practical skills: Activities like designing, measuring, and constructing model houses help children develop practical skills and problem-solving abilities.

Living Lessons are video lessons where a teacher leads the class through the main lessons for this grade. You can use these lessons as examples to follow for your own teaching or can use them as supplements to your own teaching (we all need a break now and then. I would have loved to have these available on days I was ill or was taking care of my fussy baby).

We have this course labelled as belonging to Teacher Amy, However Waldorf Teacher Mellie is also joining your student on their journey! NEW this year!
