Waldorf Block: G3: Third Grade Science
Waldorf Third Grade Science Block: A Hands-On Exploration of Practical Life In the Waldorf curriculum, the third-grade science block offers a unique and practical approach to understanding the world around us. Moving beyond abstract concepts, students immerse themselves in the essentials of human life: farming, building (see the "Third Grade Housebuilding Block), and clothing. This approach is designed to resonate with the developing third grader's growing sense of independence and readiness for hands-on, meaningful work. This block contains science lessons for third grade. You can see more details in the class list below.
- Farming and Gardening: Students explore the origins of food, learning about plants, animals, and their relationship to the earth. They may engage in activities like:
- Gardening: Planting, weeding, and harvesting crops.
- Farming activities: Processing fruits and vegetables, fixing fences, and preparing garden beds.
- Understanding the farmer's work: Learning how farmers work with nature's elements.
- Weeklong farm trip: Some schools offer an intensive farm experience where students care for animals and tend crops
- Clothing and Fibers: Students investigate the origins of clothing, exploring natural fibers like wool, cotton, flax, and silk. They may even participate in activities like shearing sheep and processing the fiber.
- Develops a deeper connection to nature: By directly engaging with farming and gardening, students build an appreciation for the natural world and the systems that sustain us.
- Provides a practical foundation for future science studies: The hands-on experiences lay the groundwork for later, more formal studies in science.
- Fosters self-reliance and independence: Students learn essential skills related to food, shelter, and clothing, empowering them in their growing individuality.
- Integrates with other subjects: Science concepts are woven into broader studies like geography, history, and even math (through measurement).
This practical and experiential Earthschooling Waldorf science block helps third graders understand their place in the world and develop a responsible relationship with the earth and its resources. It provides a rich, engaging, and meaningful introduction to the wonders of science that will resonate with them for years to come.

Living Lessons are video lessons where a teacher leads the class through the main lessons for this grade. You can use these lessons as examples to follow for your own teaching or can use them as supplements to your own teaching (we all need a break now and then. I would have loved to have these available on days I was ill or was taking care of my fussy baby).
We have this course labelled as belonging to Teacher Amy, However Waldorf Teacher Mellie is also joining your student on their journey! NEW this year!
