Waldorf first grade handwork introduces young students to the rewarding world of textile arts, specifically knitting, fostering holistic development and laying a strong foundation for future learning. More than just a craft, handwork in Waldorf education is carefully designed to support the developmental stage of the six and seven-year-old child. The rhythmic motions of knitting engage both hemispheres of the brain, strengthening fine motor skills essential for writing, enhancing concentration, and promoting hand-eye coordination. This practice also cultivates patience, perseverance, and problem-solving abilities. This includes the new e-book “First Grade Arts & Crafts for the Waldorf Year” which supplies crafts and stories to go with them for the entire year as well as the e-books “Natural Gifts for Kids to Make”, and many more first grade Waldorf handwork activities! This year we will learn finger-crochet, finger-knitting, knitting, sewing, felting, and much more!

The Waldorf fifth-grade handwork block is an essential part of the curriculum, emphasizing knitting socks to develop dexterity and introduce working in three dimensions. This engaging block helps students master various knitting techniques like knitting, purling, ribbing, and stockinette, while also following written patterns and picking up stitches. The Earthschooling Waldorf sixth grade handwork block is an integral part of the Waldorf curriculum, engaging students in the rewarding and skill-building experience of creating objects by hand. This block typically focuses on designing and sewing a three-dimensional animal, often linked to the study of herd animals like the elephant, or creating Waldorf dolls.

In the Waldorf seventh grade, handwork moves beyond basic knitting and crocheting to engage students in projects that resonate with their developing intellect and emotional life. The Waldorf eighth-grade handwork block is a significant step in the handwork curriculum, shifting from years of exclusively hand-based crafting to incorporating the use of sewing machines. This aligns with the eighth-grade curriculum's focus on modern history, including the Industrial Revolution.

This teacher evaluation and monthly meeting feature is for one student. Even if you have multiple students in the family you need to have a different evaluation account for each student. One group meeting every month with teacher Kristie Burns (and perhaps another teacher in the future) to talk about the month and the curriculum. 2. You can submit student work in the comments section of the curriculum and it will be marked and graded by Kristie Burns or another teacher. You can submit up to 4 pieces of work each week.

This coaching element is available to all high school students and includes the following: 1. One group meeting every month with teacher Kristie Burns with all other coaching students: topic will be general or specific and we may set up a book club as well. 2. You can submit your work in the comments section of the high school curriculum and it will be marked and graded by Kristie Burns. You can submit up to 4 pieces of work each week. 3. You will be put on a special mailing list to receive extra ideas and inspirations for high school work.
